A lot of people associate the Riesling grape with Germany, so the results of the recent Drinks Business Riesling Masters competition were very interesting. In the dry wines category it was Australia’s Eden Valley and Clare Valley that took most of the awards across all price points. In the medium category Canada’s Niagara Peninsula took the most prizes, so watch out Germany and Alsace you’re not top dogs any more.
One interesting quote in the article was “it’s common to hear consumers express their dislike for Riesling, never have I heard a professional profess anything other than a deep affection for the grape” – doesn’t this indicate a problem for the industry, if “professionals” who have been told this is a noble grape, you should like it, are becoming removed from the customer base?
